About Sciez

Sciez is a commune in the Haute Savoie department of the Auvergne Rhône Alpes region in south eastern France. Home to around 6,500 people, it lies on the southern shore of Lac Léman (Lake Geneva) and forms part of the Greater Geneva (Grand Genève) cross border area.

Located just 25 km (around 30 minutes) northeast of Geneva, Sciez is easy to reach by bus, train, or car. The local climate is shaped by the nearby mountains, while the lake creates a micro climate that helps keep winters relatively mild and summers warm. Lake Geneva is influenced by two main wind patterns: the Bise from the northeast and the Vent, most often from the southwest. When these larger scale winds are absent, a regular thermal breeze pattern typically sets in.

The commune is known for its largely preserved natural setting, where lake, forest, and rural landscapes remain evident despite modern growth. Inhabited since the Neolithic era, the area features notable medieval heritage, including the 12thcentury Tour de Marignan and the Château de Coudrée—now a wine estate and a luxury hotel respectively.

Sciez and its surrounding area hold several national tourism labels, including Famille Plus, Green Station, and Blue Flag for its marinas—recognising strong family friendly facilities, ecotourism standards, and clean, well managed waterfronts.
