The 2021 Hansa Class World Championships were held in Palermo, Italy from October 2nd to 9th, 2021. The event also included a Para World Sailing Championship for eligible sailors.

Unfortunately, due to COVID19 travel restrictions, competitors from many countries were unable to attend, however the regatta was strongly supported by European sailors, with 180 competitors from 25 nations taking part.

The weather was not kind at the start of the regatta, with rain and thunderstorms interrupting day 1.

In the 303 singles division there were 30 boats, and Poland’s Piotr Cichocki took out the first two races. In the doubles division, Cichocki teamed up with Olga Górnaś-Grudzień and battled against seasoned Australian pair Chris Symonds and Ella Klinger in the 29 boat fleet.

The Liberty fleet saw 16 competitors – 9 of whom were female. Reigning Servo World Champion, Netherlands’ Vera Voorbach came second in race 1, but regrouped to take the next two wins in front of France’s Gerard Eychenne and Englands Paul Phillips.

In a first for Hansa World Championships, the sailing was live streamed on Facebook with sailors from around the world tuning in to watch the action.

Light winds and then strong winds caused some headaches for the race Committee, but all divisions got their required number of races in.

Piotr Cichocki was outstanding in the 303 singles, winning all but 1 of his races, finishing 10 points in front of Cecile Venuat (FRA) and Rory McKinna (GBR) a further 7 points behind in 3rd place.

Closer action in the 303 doubles division with the Australian pair of Symonds and Klinger taking overall victory by winning the final race – giving them a 1 point victory over Poland’s Cichocki and Górnaś-Grudzień. So dominant were the top two teams that 3rd place went to France’s Guyon-Ducruix who were 14 points behind second place.

Similar dominance in the Liberty fleet saw Vera Voorbach become the first female sailing full servo to take out the World Liberty title. Close racing for second and third places saw Eychenne (FRA) and Phillips (GBR) separated by only 1 point.
